NGO leader passes away

NONGPOH: President of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) Central Body, GH Kharshanlor, passed away at his residence in Mawdaron, Saiden, Ri Bhoi, on Friday morning, after a prolonged illness. He was 45 years old.
He took over the mantle of HNYF president in 2004 from Latiplang Kharkongor, Nongthymmai MDC, who resigned to join politics.
Having served for more than 25 years as an NGO leader, Kharshanlor was first a social activist who later joined the Khasi Students’ Union in 1995 as the first president of the Nongpoh Unit of the Union.
After leaving KSU, he associated himself with the Ri Bhoi Youth Federation from 1996 till 2002 and served as the political and publicity secretary of the NGO.
Kharshanlor is one of the prominent NGO leaders spearheading various movements for the rights of indigenous people. He was also the spokesperson of the Coordination Committee of International Borders, an umbrella organisation comprising 13 NGOs formed to look after the Indo-Bangla border fencing issue.
His funeral will be held at his residence on Saturday from 1 pm. Kharshanlor is the son of (L) Tbn GR Chyne and Skintimen Kharshanlor.
