Village secy assaulted, robbed
MAWKYRWAT: In an outrageous incident, Secretary Shnong of Nonglikata village under Ranikor Civil Sub-Division, South West Khasi Hills, and president of the Federation of Khasi-Jaintia & Garo People (FKJGP) Nonglikata Unit, Bestfulman Langte, was brutally assaulted by three miscreants who also robbed him on Sunday night. According to the FIR filed with Ranikor Police Station, Bestfulman Langte said that three people, identified as Num Marak, Chiliman R Sangma and Nikman Marak from Khangkhlak village in Ranikor area, came to Nonglikata village and started causing nuisance. “As a secretary of the village, I came out and told them not to make trouble and asked them to leave the village immediately as people from outside have been disallowed to enter the village during night time, but they assaulted me until I was unconscious,” the FIR stated, while also informing that the three miscreants looted money from him which amounted to around Rs 10,000. Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police Maxwell B Syiem has informed that according to the doctor, Langte has suffered only a minor injury.

JAC meet today in WJH
JOWAI: The Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising the JHTOA, the AJCCTA and the MTU, has decided to hold a general meeting to confer about its further course of action with regard to its protest against non-implementation of the revised fare from East Jaintia Hills to other parts of the state, which was issued by the state government. Stating that the general meeting will be held at Tahkhniang, Tuberkmai Shnong, East Jaintia Hills at 2pm, the JAC has asked all trucks owners, transporters and its members to attend the meeting.

Headmen protest against relocation
JOWAI: Headmen from 22 Dorbar Shnong — under the umbrella of Ka Synjuk ki Waheh Chnong, Urban Jowai (SKWC-UJ) — on Monday organised a silent protest in front of the office of the Executive Engineer, PWD Jowai North Division, against the government’s decision to relocate the office from Jowai to Shangpung. Speaking to the media persons after the lour-long protest, SKWC-UJ chairman, Allan Niangti, deplored that the relocation of the PWD Division will not only affect the general public but also the staff of the office. With regard to the announcement of mini secretariat in Jowai, the Synjuk gave the thumbs up to the government’s move.

Legal Services Day observed
SHILLONG: In commemoration of the enactment of the Indian Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, the Meghalaya Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) celebrated the Legal Services Day here on Monday with a prime objective of spreading legal awareness among people. A series of publicity campaigns were carried out including announcements through mobile vans and distribution of pamphlets and posters. A webinar on Free Legal Services was also organised on the day. Speaking to media persons at the office of MSLSA, NA Khan, Member Secretary, MSLSA, said the prime aim of the Legal Services Authority at the national, state, district and sub-divisional level is to ensure free legal aid and services to the weaker sections of the society. He informed that as many as 130 panel lawyers are handling around 408 cases, out of which 407 are criminal cases besides a civil case. A total of 10 panel lawyers in the High Court are handling cases free of cost for economically weaker sections in need of legal aid, he added.
