TURA, Nov 26: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today laid the foundation stone for a new government college in Williamnagar, a move which is expected to improve the education scenario in East Garo Hills district.
Addressing the gathering, Conrad pointed out that the college would greatly benefit the youths from the region and added that there was a need to complete the construction of the college within the tenure of his government. Stating that time was a precious resource, he assured that it would be completed by December 22, 2022.
Pointing out that the college was not only important for the people of the district but to the whole of Garo Hills, Conrad assured that he would personally monitor the completion of the project. Delving into the long history of the project and the visionaries who first thought it up, Conrad said that their dreams would soon become a reality once the college is completed and functional.
The chief minister informed that although resources were limited, the government would ensure that besides the college, many more projects would be undertaken in Williamnagar. He said that the college was aimed at providing quality education and better infrastructure so that youths from the region can shine in the field of education.
Reiterating that ‘education is the utmost priority of the government’, Conrad claimed that expenditure ranging from Rs 1500 to Rs 2000 crore has been sanctioned within two years just for the improvement of educational facilities. “No other government has ever done this during their tenure. The government of the day always delivers what has been promised,” he added.
Conrad also said that being in the government was not about holding a post or meant for any personal benefit; rather one has to understand the responsibility of making a difference in people’s lives and the future of the children.
Others who were present include local MLA, Marcuise N Marak, Education Director, Ambrose Ch Marak and Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe.
