TURA, Nov 26: A prisoner under trial on charge of rape, who was lodged in Tura district jail, made a daring escape by jumping out of the vehicle taking him to hospital on Thursday morning.
The rape accused has been identified as Johnstar R Sangma (21), hailing from Siju area of South Garo Hills.
“We received information that one undertrial prisoner was severely ill and needed emergency medical care. Accordingly, an armed escort with guide was dispatched with a gypsy and the incident occurred near the hospital,” informed West Garo Hills SP, MGR Kumar.
As the vehicle approached Tura Civil Hospital, the prisoner jumped out of the moving vehicle with the intravenous drip in hand and fled into the nearby houses below the road.
Meanwhile, naka checking and search teams have been deployed and the district police have created a task force to recapture the escapee. A preliminary inquiry is also under way to determine lapses, if any, on the part of the escorting team.
