SHILLONG, Nov 29: President of Shillong Sports Association (SSA) SK Sunn has written to Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills Isawanda Laloo objecting to the construction of commercial structure on the plot of land lying between the PWD road and the western portion of the final ground of SSA, Polo Ground.
In a letter, the SSA expressed strong opposition to the construction stating that it mars the sporting atmosphere.
The SSA president has requested the DC to instruct Shillong Recreation Ground Trust (SRGT), the party undertaking construction, to immediately stop the ongoing commercialisation of Polo Ground area.
Albeit the land at Polo Ground is leased to SRGT by the state government for its upkeep, Sunn maintained that SSA has been the custodian of the football grounds for more than 100 years.
Since the term of the lease is over, and not renewed, hence the land belongs to the government, Sunn added.
