SHILLONG, Dec 12: Amid the ongoing hue and cry in Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and in the wake of the unlooked-for resignation of its employees, the Opposition on Saturday hurled brickbats at the state government over its incompetence to dole out the salaries to its staff for almost three years now.
Congress MLA, Azad Zaman, after taking cognizance of the predicament, said that despite the matter being taken up on the floor of the House, the state government has failed to release the salary of the GHADC employees.
“What we fail to understand is how is GHADC not able to pay the salaries despite having several resources of revenue collection,” he said, while pointing out that the Council has several toll gates and it even receives revenue share from the state government.
Unable to go for treatment due to non-payment of salaries, Azad said some employees have even died.
The legislator also revealed that around 30 GHADC employees have tendered their resignations so far owing to the failure of the government to clear the salaries.
“The government has failed to address this serious concern and preserve the tribal institution which was crafted to protect the interest of the tribals. But now, the Council is in such a condition due to the lack of attention by the government,” he added.
It may be mentioned that around a dozen GHADC employees had resigned on Friday.
