Bird flu alert in Rajasthan
Jaipur, Jan 3: A bird flu alert has been sounded in Rajasthan after the presence of the dreaded virus was confirmed in dead crows in Jhalawar and more avian deaths were reported in other districts, including Jaipur, officials said.
The Animal Husbandry Department has set up a state-level control room and sent its teams to the districts for effective monitoring, they said.
On Sunday, seven crows were found dead at the iconic Jal Mahal here, taking the toll to 252 in the state.
The Principal Secretary, Animal Husbandry, Kunji Lal Meena, told reporters on Sunday that the deaths due to bird flu have been mainly reported among crows, with most of them from the Kota and Jodhpur divisions. (PTI)
Kambala to be held from Jan 30
Mangaluru, Jan 3: The annual traditional buffalo race festival, Kambala, popular in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and neighbouring Kasaragod in Kerala will be held this season from January 30.
In a release from the DK district Kambala committee, Kambala Samiti president P R Shetty said the season’s first Kambala will be held on January 30 and 31 at Hokkadigoli in Bantwal taluk.
The next Kambala events will be held at Aikala Bawa (February 6,7), Vamanjur (Feb 13,14), Moodbidri (Feb 20,21), Miyyaru (Feb 27, 28), Bangrakulur (March-6, 7) and Venur (March-20, 21). (PTI)
Arms, ammo seized in J-K
Jammu, Jan 3: Security forces on Sunday recovered a cache of arms and ammunition near the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, a police officer said. This was the third round of recovery of arms and ammunition in the district following the busting of a three-member module of Jammu and Kashmir Gazanvi Force.
Poonch Senior Superintendent of Police Ramesh Angral said the fresh recovery has been made during a search and cordon operation from Dabbi village along the LoC in Balakote sector.
The recovery include one pistol, three magazines, 35 bullets and five hand grenades, he said. (PTI)
Organs of man who died on first day of 2021 donated
Surat, Jan 3: The organs of a Surat-based businessman who died on the first day of the new year were donated with the consent of his kin, giving a new lease of life to several people, the NGO that facilitated the process said on Sunday.
Vishnubhai Patel (57) suffered a brain haemorrhage after falling off a motorcycle on December 30 and was declared brain dead by doctors of Mahavir Trauma Hospital on January 1, after which his family consented to donate his heart, kidneys, lung, liver and cornea, a functionary of NGO Donate Life said.
“His heart and lung were transplanted in two patients in Chennai. The organs were transported through a green corridor created between Surat and Chennai, a distance of around 1,618 kilometres,” he said.
“His liver was transplanted in a man from Kheda at Ahmedabad’s Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC). His corneas were donated to Lok Drashti Chakshu Bank,” he added. (PTI)
