Elderly woman charred to death in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: An 87-year-old woman was charred to death in an early-morning fire in the Kharghuli area here in the wee hours of Wednesday, police said.

A team from the Latasil police station found the charred body of the elderly woman, Dhanamaya Biswakarma, inside the razed hut where she was staying alone.

“We rushed to the site after receiving information around 8am. The small hut was gutted in the fire and the mortal remains of the woman were found inside the razed hut. We suspect the fire started in the early hours of this morning,” a police official told The Shillong Times.

“The victim’s body has been sent for post mortem,” he said.

This is the second incident of fire-related casualties in Assam in 24 hours since Tuesday morning.

Two children aged four and five, were charred to death when they were playing in their house in Kokrajhar district of western Assam on Tuesday.
