Tiger monitoring starts at Kaziranga National Park

GUWAHATI: Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve officials have started the phase four tiger monitoring for 2021 to assess the population and other important aspects of tigers at the park.

Park Director P. Sivakumar along with Ramesh Kumar Gogoi, divisional forest officer inaugurated the phase four tiger monitoring for the year in the presence of senior forest department officials and other members.

“This year, the entire Kaziranga Tiger Reserve  has been divided into four blocks. While the first two blocks are in eastern Assam wildlife division, block three is in Biswanath wildlife division and block 4 is under Nagaon wildlife division comprising 1000 square kilometres of a total of 1055 square kilometres of tiger reserve area,” Sivakumar said.

Reportedly, as many as 276 close monitoring cameras would be installed across the area to capture movements of tigers in the park.

Each camera will cover a grid of around 2 square kilometers.

“Apart from forest personnel, volunteers from local schools and colleges will also be engaged for the purpose,” he said.

According to reports, the tiger census of 2018 found around 120 tigers in the park.
