NONGPOH, Jan 7: The Confederation of Ri Bhoi People (CoRP) central body, in a letter to Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah on Thursday, sought her intervention into the alleged illegal construction of transit camp of the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) by the Assam government at Khanapara, which is under the jurisdiction of Raid Marwet, Mylliem Syiemship.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting with the DC, the organisation president, Bandari Ryntathiang, alleged that the Assam government is encroaching into Meghalaya territory.
He also informed that earlier the Secretary to the Executive Committee of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District )Council (KHADC) had written a letter to the Chief Secretary of Assam, requesting stay of the construction work of the camp until the matter is settled between both the counterparts as the area falls under the jurisdiction of the Raid Marwet, Mylliem Syiemship.
“It is very unfortunate that the Meghalaya government is not taking enough serious steps towards solving the long-pending border dispute with Assam, which encourages the Assam government to encroach into the territories of Meghalaya from time to time,” Ryntathiang said.
He further informed that the CoRP will soon meet the minister concerned along with proper documents of the land owner to prove that the area where the camp is being set up belongs to Meghalaya.
