Lankan Navy apprehends nine Indian fishermen
Rameswaram (TN), Jan 10: The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested nine Indian fishermen and seized one mechanised boat for allegedly fishing in that country’s waters, besides damaging fishing nets in a separate incident, officials said here on Sunday. The fishermen were arrested near Neduntheevu on Saturday, Fisheries department officials said, adding that one boat was also seized by the Lankan navy. In a separate incident, the Lankan navy personnel allegedly damaged fishing nets in 20 mechanised boats near Katchatheevu on Saturday, the officials added. (PTI)
Navy sailor dies on board warship
Mumbai, Jan 10: A Navy sailor was found dead on board a warship here on Sunday with a bullet injury, an official said. Ramesh Choudhary (22) was posted on board INS Betwa, a Navy spokesperson said in a release. The sailor’s service issue rifle was found next to him, the release said, but did not specify if it was suicide. INS Betwa is a Brahmaputra-class guided missile frigate currently in service with the Indian Navy. The ship is named after the Betwa river. The sailor, who recently returned to the warship after leave, hailed from Jodhpur in Rajasthan and is survived by his parents and a younger sister, the release said. (PTI)
Minor pregnant rape survivor dies
Bareilly, Jan 10: A 15-year-old rape survivor who was seven months pregnant died of pregnancy-related complications here at the district hospital, officials said on Sunday. Additional Director and Superintendent in-charge of the hospital, Subodh Sharma said the girl was brought to the hospital in a serious condition last week and her health deteriorated further. Senior Superintendent of Police, Bareilly, Rohit Singh Sajwan said: “The post-mortem report said that the cause behind the death was due to infection. The viscera of the victim have been preserved.” The father of the girl, who was mentally unsound, said the family came to know about their daughter being six months pregnant on December 6. (IANS)
AMU student shot dead
Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh), Jan 10: A student of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has been shot dead, police said on Sunday. The deceased Atif, a second-year BA student, was returning home on a two-wheeler with his friend late on Saturday night in the Quarsi police circle area, when the assailants opened fire. Atif fell down at the spot while his friend Zaid escaped with the Scooty. AMU students came together and created a ruckus at the J.N. Medical College in protest against the incident. Circle Officer Anil Samania said that Atif, accused of conspiracy in the murder of one Shahbaz in Jamalpur area in 2018, was out on bail. He said the body had been sent for post mortem and further investigations were underway. (IANS)
Migratory birds found dead
Shimla, Jan 10: Carcasses of 215 migratory birds were found in Pong Dam Wildlife Sanctuary in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district on Sunday, taking the total number of such birds suspected to have died of avian influenza to 4,235, officials said. (PTI)
