Canada’s Guv General resigns
Ottawa, Jan 22: Canada’s Governor General Julie Payette has announced her resignation after the conclusion of a harassment investigation at the her office.
“Everyone has a right to a healthy and safe work environment, at all times and under all circumstances. It appears this was not always the case at the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General,” Xinhua news agency quoted Payette as saying in a statement on Thursday.
“Tensions have arisen at Rideau Hall over the past few months and for that, I am sorry,” she added.
Payette’s resignation came hours after media reports said that an independent review into workplace harassment allegations against her was completed and that the details of the report were “damaging”. (IANS)
IS claims twin blasts in Baghdad
Baghdad, Jan 22: The Islamic State claimed responsibility for a rare suicide attack that rocked central Baghdad, killing 32 people and wounding dozens. The bombing targeted “apostate Shiites,” the group said in a statement on an IS-affiliated website late on Thursday. At least 32 people were killed and over 100 people wounded in the blasts on Thursday. Some were in severe condition.
According to officials, the first suicide bomber cried out loudly that he was ill in the middle of the bustling market, prompting a crowd to gather around him — and that’s when he detonated his explosive belt. The second detonated shortly after. (AP)
Tyre falls from small plane
Chicago (US), Jan 22: A tyre fell from a small plane near homes in a Chicago neighbourhood before the plane landed safely at O’Hare International Airport.
No injuries were reported on the ground or among those on the plane, which sent up sparks on a runway as it landed Thursday evening without its left side landing gear, the Chicago Department of Aviation said. Rose Bock said she heard a big boom in her Jefferson Park neighbourhood about seven miles (11 kilometers) from the airport before the wheel was found in a neighbour’s yard. (AP)
