Nongpoh, Jan 25: In yet another act of cross-border transgression, the West Karbi Anglong District Administration of Assam recently halted construction of an anganwadi centre at Madan Umwang under Block II in Ri Bhoi district, claiming that the land belongs to Assam.
Madan Umwang Headman, S Marboh, informed that the authorities from West Karbi Anglong came to the village on January 15 and stopped the ongoing construction work saying that they will not permit any development scheme from Meghalaya to be implemented in “their area”.
Following the incident, leaders of the Meghalaya Peoples Social Organisation (MPSO), including its women’s wing, visited Madan Umwang on Monday and discussed the recent encroachment by Assam with the village leaders.
MPSO also met the BDO of Umsning C&RD Block, Raja Brahma and sought details of the incident.
The organisation, meanwhile, expressed concern that some border residents were in possession of dual EPICs. The organisation urged the district administration to act against those having dual citizenship.
