SHILLONG, Feb 4: Governor Satya Pal Malik has allayed apprehensions over heightened influx in the advent of introduction of railways in Meghalaya.
While expressing surprise over the widespread opposition to rail-linking the state, the Governor asserted that railways will not create any problem for the residents but ensure progress for Meghalaya.
“I don’t know why they are opposing introduction of railways in the state. Railways will bring progress,” the Governor told reporters here on Thursday.
According to Malik, several protective mechanisms, which are already in place, will ensure residents are not troubled. “Here, no outsider can harm the local population,” he said.
The plans of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) to rail-link Meghalaya has remained a distant dream with opposition from pressure groups, who are not willing to even discuss the matter pertaining to railways unless ILP is implemented in the state.
The NFR plans to connect Tetelia in Assam to Byrnihat and there were plans to even connect the capital city Shillong.
