SHILLONG, Feb 9: The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative in collaboration with Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) organised a webinar on ‘Recommendations on Ensuring Menstrual Hygiene in Prisons’ on Friday, to help ensure menstrual health standards in prisons for inmates and staff members.
During the programme, Member Secretary of MSLSA, NA Khan, reiterated that the fundamental rights of women with regard to their menstrual hygiene should not be undermined even in prison. He further added that jail authorities and police department needs to be sensitised about their role in ensuring that basic standards are complied during detention of women in all police stations and lock-ups in the state.
Several papers presented during the programme include ‘Menstruation as Biological Phenomenon’, ‘Range of Disposal and Reusable Products’, ‘Women Enclosure’ and ‘Role of Non-Menstruating Ally in Prison Ecosystem’.
