SHILLONG, Feb 12: Meghalaya Government on Friday declared Umden-Diwon village as the state’s first eri silk village in recognition of the age-old rich textile tradition of the state’s indigenous tribal communities.
Although Umden-Diwon is known for its vibrant culture, rich textile heritage, scenic surroundings et al, what made the village emerge as the epicentre of eri culture in state is its eri textiles.
The village continues to draw researchers and visitors for its exceptional products, which are ethically produced and organically sourced.
With a view to meeting the aspirations of the weavers, declaration of eri silk village is expected to contribute to capacity-building, design up scaling, financial assistance, promotion, selling and marketing as well as integrating the sector with latest technology to enable the village to further develop as a self-reliant, vibrant village.
The village is also aimed at bolstering women empowerment and propelling as a centre that will produce world-class silk products – from farm to fibre, fibre to fabric and ultimately from thread to trend, assuring availability and visibility of eri products and further motivating neighbouring villages to pursue and promote eri culture.
The programme was attended by Agriculture Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh, local MLA Mayralborn Syiem, Commissioner Secretary of Textiles FR Kharkongor, Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah, besides spinners and weavers from the area.
An exhibition showcasing various unique eri products of the area besides a demo stall displaying the entire spinning, weaving and organic dyeing provided a fascinating glimpse to visitors.
