Gang takes ATM away in vehicle
Coimbatore, Feb 28: A four-member gang stole an ATM (automated teller machine) by pulling it out of the kiosk by using a vehicle after failing to break the teller machine to lift the cash, police said on Sunday. The incident was reported at Periyapalayam near Tirupur, the police said. Passersby noticed the door of the ATM kiosk belonging to a nationalised bank broken open early this morning and alerted the police. Fingerprint experts and a sniffer dog were pressed into service as part of the investigation, the police said. CCTV footage showed the masked men entering the kiosk, tying one end of a rope to the ATM and pulling it out from the other end tied to a four-wheeler as they could not break open the teller machine, they said. The vehicle was later found abandoned near Perundurai in Erode district, they added. (PTI)

Newborn stolen from hospital
Jaipur, Feb 28: A newborn boy was allegedly stolen by a woman from Rajasthan’s Dungarpur district hospital on Sunday. The six-day-old child went missing from the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit within moments when the ward was being cleaned and no attendant was present near the child, police said. After scanning the CCTV footage, police have identified a woman as suspect and are trying to nab her. (PTI)

Foreign cigarettes seized in Mumbai
Mumbai, Feb 28: The Mumbai unit of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized a consignment of foreign cigarettes worth over Rs 4.75 crore from a container freight station near Nhava Sheva port, an official said on Sunday. The stock, comprising 21.60 lakh cigarettes, was being smuggled into the country as part of an import consignment arriving from Dubai in the Middle East, he said. The stock was concealed behind wallets, which was the declared cargo, and was being brought into the country using an importer-exporter code (IEC) that was obtained by misusing KYC documents, the official informed. This was the fifth major haul in the last two months by the Mumbai unit of DRI, said a release. (PTI)

Teenage girl drowns in canal
Erode (TN), Feb 28: A 17-year-old girl drowned in the Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) canal while her fatheris reported missing, police said on Sunday. Selvaganapathy (45) of Tirupur, his wife and two daughters – Gayathiri and Anushri (17) stopped by the LBP canal near Nasiyanur after attending a function at Attur in Salem district, the police said. The girls got into the waters to bathe and got washed away, they said. Seeing this, people nearby got into the canal and saved Gayathiri, they said. Her father jumped into the waters to rescue Anushri. But, he and his teenaged daughter got pulled in, the police said. Onlookers later retrieved the body of Anushri but Selvaganapathy could not be traced, the police said. The police and the Fire and Rescue Services personnel have launched a search for his body.
