One convicted for raping step daughter
NONGSTOIN, March 5: The Court of Special Judge (POCSO), Nongstoin, convicted an accused Charles Tynpuin and sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 20,000 for raping his step daughter at their residence in Pyndenglawar village, West Khasi Hills, in October, 2016. After a case was registered with the Nongstoin Police, due inquiry was carried out and with concerted efforts, Charles Tympuin was arrested. The victim has been granted compensation of Rs 3 lakh.

Woman goes missing in Nongstoin
NONGSTOIN/TURA, March 5: A thirty-year-old woman identified as Anisha Lyngkhoi of Siejlieh village in Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills, has went missing since March 1 last. It was informed that Anisha had set out to purchase medicine that afternoon but has not returned home till date. The family members have reportedly searched for her in all possible places in Nongstoin but to no avail. She was also not reachable through phone calls as nobody answered the calls. The family has filed a report with Nongstoin Police Station. Anisha’s elder sister informed that she is a mother of four. The family members have urged the public to contact Nongstoin Police if they have whereabouts of the missing person.

Missing woman lodged at centre
A woman was on Monday last found loitering at the Siju Forest Reserve in South Garo Hills and brought to the Baghmara Women Police Cell, a delayed report has revealed. The woman is currently lodged at the One Stop Centre (OSC) shelter. According to officials of the centre, the profile, family and address of the individual could not be ascertained as she is unable to communicate. Meanwhile, those with information about the person have been asked to call on the OSC, Bolsal Ading, Baghmara, South Garo Hills.

Girl killed after falling into river
NONGPOH, March 5: A worker of the entry point at Umling in Ri Bhoi died after falling into Umtrew River in Panitola village under Byrnihat Police Outpost while taking a picture along with one of her friends on Thursday evening. The girl, identified as Phibadawanrisa Lyngdoh Mawlong (23) of Mission, Mairang, was on a break and along with her colleagues when she decided to relax near the Umtrew River. However, while taking pictures, she slipped and fell into the river along with the one of her friend, Sandra Khongrangjem (22), hailing from Mawlai Nongkwar. Her colleagues rushed to save the two girls from drowning. After being pulled out of the water, Sandra regained her consciousness while Phibadawanrisa laid unconscious, following which she was rushed to Byrnihat PHC for treatment. Unfortunately, the doctors there declared her brought dead. The body was handed over to the families after completing all formalities.

Synjuk pulls out of workshop
SHILLONG, March 5: The Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong, Bri U Hynniewtrep, a conglomeration of traditional village leaders from Khasi and Jaintia Hills, has disassociated itself from the workshop conducted by Dalberg, a consultancy firm engaged for improving mobility in Shillong by two government departments – Meghalaya Infrastructure Development & Finance Corporation Ltd and Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project. This move comes in the wake of a columnist, in the Letters to Editor of this paper, stating that the entire process is void of transparency and credibility.

Inspection of water supply source
JOWAI, March 5: After receiving complaints about the quality and shortage of water supply in Amlarem areas from Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong, the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Amlarem Civil Sub-Division, Abhilash Baranwal, along with the Sub-divisional Officer, PHE, Deibormi Toi, inspected the source of water supply of the PHE department to Amlarem areas on Friday. It was discerned that water flowing through the streams has decreased as it is the winter season whereas the unsatisfactory quality of water was explainable as car and clothes were washed along the streams that flow to the main source of the water supply hence polluting the water. The SDO has directed the officials to frame conditions so as to protect the contamination of the water source and also conduct a test of the water quality in the area.
