TURA/KHLIEHRIAT/NONGPOH/NONGSTOIN, March 8: Several government organisations, educational institutes and NGOs across the state held various events, including panel talks, group discussions, exhibitions, workshops and art competitions to mark the International Women’s Day on Monday.
West Garo Hills
During a group discussion at the District and Sessions Court in Tura, Dashalin Kharbteng, the District and Session Judge, spoke about the roles and responsibilities of women in the society and urged the fair sex to take up challenges.
At Krishi Vigyan Kendra in West Garo Hills, women entrepreneurs were felicitated.
Women self-help groups (SHGs) from Tura and beyond set up stalls to sell their produce at DC’s Park in Tura. Products such as organic soaps, breads and shampoos were exhibited.
At Tura’s Don Bosco College, a poster-writing competition on women contributors to society was organised for students.
At Industrial Training Institute, an event to sensitise people on gender equality was held. Secretary of Mothers’ Union and chief guest, Sume B Sangma, emphasised on participation of women in Nokmaship.
South West Garo Hills
Zikzak Multi-facility Centre in South West Garo Hills along with the department of social welfare, South West Garo Hills, Block Mission Management Unit, Zikzak, and Meghalaya State Rural Livelihood Society held a discussion-cum-workshop on topics related to women’s health. Deputy Commissioner Ramakrishna Chitturi encouraged women to take active part in decision-making.
SPARK, a Meghalaya-based NGO, organised a session at Mawlong Umsawli, Mawlynrei Triashnong and Rangmen Nongsder villages to create awareness about women’s rights among rural women.
East Jaintia Hills
District Legal Services Authority in Khliehriat, East Jaintia Hills, celebrated the International Women’s Day at the community hall in Latyrke village. Chief Judicial Magistrate DS Marbaniang spoke about the significance of the day.
Ri Bhoi
The Women’s Cell of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region at Umiam organised group discussions to mark the day. Women farmers from the state were awarded for their efforts in agriculture amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
At University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya, 12 sanitary napkin-vending machines were launched. An organic hut was put in place to help women from neighbouring villages sell their home-grown products.
West Khasi Hills
Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Nongstoin celebrated the day at community hall in Mairang Mission. A drawing competition was organised for the rural youths. Two women entrepreneurs, SL Mawnai and BL Mairang, were felicitated during the programme.
