Educating citizenry on safe driving habits vital: DSLA

KHLIEHRIAT, March 13: The secretary of District Legal Services Authority, East Jaintia Hills, on Saturday accentuated the need to educate people on safe driving habits so as to keep them and the pedestrians alike out of harm’s way.
The DSLA secretary, DS Marbaniang, who is also the Chief Judicial Magistrate, was addressing a gathering at an awareness programme, which was organised on the premises of Khliehriat Higher Secondary School.
Earlier in the day, a car rally, which was thematised on ‘Safe Driving Habits’, was flagged off by Marbaniang along with East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner, E Kharmalki.
The rally was organised by the East Jaintia Hills DSLA in collaboration with the offices of the East Jaintia Hills DC, the Superintendent of Police and the District Transport Officer.
Marbaniang, in his address, explained the reason behind the rally. He said, “Let us inculcate this habit of good and safe driving, to drive responsible and to be responsible for the other person who is driving towards you”.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate also gave a brief statistics and reports of road mishaps and fatalities across the country.
He also exhorted the citizenry to be responsible and drive cautiously.
Others who spoke during the occasion include Deputy Superintendent of Police, Motor Vehicle Inspector, among others.
The ones who participated in the rally include Jaintia Cycling Forum Jowai, Little Star School, Jaintia Eastern College, Riders Tribe from Rymbai, Tuber Bikers and Tours Association, EJAMSA Khliehriat, Cement Plants of East Jaintia Hills District, Lad Rymbai Indica Association, East Jaintia Taxi Owner and Driver Association, East Jaintia Hills District Tourist Taxi Association and Friends Ride from Jowai.
The other highlights of the programme include free medical eye check-up carried out by Bansara Eye Care Centre, (Contd on P-4)

Later, prizes and certificates were also distributed among the winners of slogan and essay competition, winners of best customized car and best customized bikes that participated in the rally.
