TURA, March 14: A total of 23 members of the United Garo Autonomous Council Movement Committee (UGACMC) in Assam have been removed from membership after they allegedly accepted the Garo Development Council (GDC) without consulting other organisations and the majority of the Garo population from the state.
Several Garo organisations including the A’chik Socialist Youth Front of India (ASYFI), All Assam Garo Gaonbura Association (AAGGA), Garo Women federation (GWF), Garo National Union’s Women Wing (GNUWW), Garo national Cpuncil (GNC), Garo Youth Council (GYC), Garo National Union Youth Wing (GNUYW), Garo Women’s Union (GWU) and Garo Women’s Council (GWC) recently held a meeting after which a resolution was taken to remove all of the 23 members.
“It is learnt that the members of the UGACMC accepted the GDC offered by the Assam Government without consulting the organization or the majority of the Garo population of Assam. We have resolved not to accept the offer of GDC as well as to not allow any splinter groups or individuals to accept it,” the organisations stated.
A letter strongly rejecting the GDC as well as intimation of the dissolution of the members has also been submitted by the organizations to Goalpara Deputy Commissioner, Varnali Deka.
