SHILLONG, March 20: The East Khasi Hills District Magistrate has prohibited people without quarry permit or other necessary certificates from carrying out illegal quarrying activities across the district.
According to a directive on Saturday, the debarment has been initiated in view of complaints that stone quarrying and sand mining are being illegally carried out at Umtyngar, Swer areas and all along the way to Sohra.
“Further, it is also learnt that such indiscriminate illegal quarrying is also taking place in other areas of the district including along the national highway/state roads/other areas and these activities are in flagrant violation of the provision of the Meghalaya Minor Mineral Concession Rules 2015 (as amended),” the directive said, adding that violation will entail prosecution under Section 188 CrPC.
