UDP demands power dept, MeECL overhaul

SHILLONG, March 21: Upset over the power crisis in the state, the United Democratic Party (UDP) has demanded an overhaul of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) and the power department.
UDP General Secretary Jemino Mawthoh said, “The state needs to overhaul the MeECL and the power department by putting right people in right placesto ensure effective functioning of the bodies.”
“If the power sector gets affected, everything else goes for a toss,” he said.
The general secretary of the important constituent of the National People’s Party-led Meghalaya DemocraticAlliance coalition, UDP, said it wasclear that all was not well with the MeECL and the functioning of the power sector in the state.
Pointing out that a lot of things, including working hours and economy of the state, have been affected by the frequentpower outages, Mawthoh said, “We would like to suggest that the government should make sincere efforts. We know the problem is age old, but we do not want to get into a blame-game”.
Expressing apprehensions about the future, Mawthoh said, “The state has suffered enough. We need a long-term perspective plan in place and we must rectify inadequacies.”
