SHILLONG, March 24: Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh, on Wednesday, expressed fears that the new Assembly building project may not be complete on stipulated time as the government is looking for workers specialised in electricals etc.
“We are looking forward to people with specialized skills in fields such as electricals, who have executed works for major projects above Rs 10-20 crores. Otherwise, we won’t be able to complete the project on time,” Metbah said on Wednesday.
The Assembly Speaker, however, informed that they had a number of presentations from various companies as well as candidates, which will be finalised in a couple of weeks.
Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, during his recent visit to the state, had also assured all support to the Meghalaya government by Parliament after touring the construction site of the new Assembly building.
It is worth mentioning here that the state Assembly currently functions at a cultural complex in Rilbong here.
The need for a new Assembly building arose after the 125-year-old structure that housed the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly at Police Bazar was gutted in a devastating fire in the year 2001.
The tender value of the project is Rs 127 crore, which is being implemented by an Uttar Pradesh government-based PSU, Rajkiya Nirman Nigam Ltd.
The new Assembly building will comprise the basement, ground floor, first and second floor with the total area of the basement being 11,000 square feet, while the area of the other floors including the ground floor is 55,000 square feet.
