TURA, March 28: Police in South Garo Hills are in search of an armed gang that abducted a trader and extorted ransom, five days ago.
Four men armed with guns and wearing camouflage dress whisked away trader Mohammad Ali from his pan shop in Nengkulgittim village of South Garo Hills during the night, last week.
The gang tortured him with threat of execution and fired in the air to warn him that unless he coughed up Rs 3 lakh, they would return to pick him up again. They also looted him of his savings from the shop amounting to around Rs 62,000 before letting him go, one night later.
Police have identified the criminals involved and are on a search after they disappeared from their place of dwelling, shortly after committing the crime.
The possession of weapons by the gang is also being investigated since there has been no militant activity in the region for a long time.
