SHILLONG, March 29: Kongthong village has made a name for itself in Meghalaya, particularly after MP Rakesh Sinha adopted the village in August last year.
As the MP strives for world heritage status to the village, Sordar of Raid Kongthong, Sylloklang Majaw, has questioned the adoption of the village by the Rajya Sabha MP reasoning that it was done without taking the village authority into confidence.
“We strongly oppose the implementation of the MP scheme without the approval of the village authority. The recent visit of Rakesh Sinha to Kongthong village during the Republic Day celebration this year is an insult to the village authority and many of the residents are not happy with it,” Majaw said in a statement.
According to him, the people had also rejected the proposal of the Indigenous Agro-Tourism Cooperative Society secretary, Rothel Khongsit, to implement the scheme of the MP through the village employment council.
The Sordar also said that it is wrong on the part of Sinha to say that the people of the village has been neglected and left to fend for itself. “We have been receiving developmental schemes from the state government, local MLA and MDC, Syiem of Hima Sohra among others for the overall development of the village,” the village Sordar asserted.
He stressed that any developmental schemes for the village should be taken up after prior consultation with the village Dorbar.
