Villagers accuse two Nokma of selling off land for stone quarry
TURA, April 13: Residents of several villages in East Garo Hills have accused two Nokma and their families of selling off land under their A’king to a particular individual for the purpose of illegal extraction of stones. According to the residents, the stone quarry is to come up at Rangmalgre A’king, located between the picturesque Rongbang Dare (falls) and the village of Songsak. While opposing vehemently the illegal stone quarry, complaints have reportedly also been submitted to various authorities including the NGT, Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, District Council, District Forest Officer and others. A meeting in the presence of the two Nokmas concerned was held recently where people voiced their strong opposition to the move. Besides residents of villages under Rangmalgre A’king, those from surrounding villages, over a dozen others also participated in the meeting.

NEHU VC charged with ‘intrusion’
SHILLONG, April 13: The North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) on Tuesday accused Vice Chancellor SK Srivastava of calling on a faculty member at his residence during “odd hours” on March 30 and intimidating him and his family. In a statement, the NEHUTA said that such a move is a “serious breach of basic norms of university functioning”. “The NEHUTA strongly condemns such an untoward move by the VC in the pretext of getting some official works done from the concerned faculty. Conducting an illegal raid like intrusion and trespass in the private space of the faculty has been unprecedented in NEHU history,” it said. The NEHUTA said that such a move will taint the glory of the university. “The rule of law does not allow for such an unruly and arbitrary misuse and abuse of power, which is completely perpetrated by the term-expired VC, who somehow wanted to impose his whimsical wishes on the concerned faculty member,” the statement said.
