TURA, April 21: The opposition Congress has decided to field Kharkutta MDC Cherak W Momin for the election to the post of Chairman of GHADC on Wednesday morning.
The outcome of the chairman’s election will decide on where the formation of the new Executive Committee will head.
A win for the NPP alliance, formed under the name of Garo Hills Democratic Coalition, will secure its position for the EC formation while a defeat will open up a contest for the new EC formation.
With 16 MDCs out of 29 on its side, the NPP alliance is expecting a clear win while will further halt any possible attempt of a contest from the Congress side for the executive position of the new CEM.
The NPP, which is slated to form the new Executive Committee in the GHADC has already decided on Babelapara MDC Rakesh A Sangma as their candidate for the contest.
Rakesh A Sangma is a first time MDCwho gave a shock defeat to sitting Gambegre MLA and state NCP chief Saleng A Sangma in this council polls.
The Congress candidate, on the other hand, is a former MDC and MLA who has returned to the GHADC as an elected member after more than six years.
Cherak was earlier an MDC and later became an MLA in 2013 elections. He was defeated by Rupert Momin of the NPP in the 2018 assembly polls from Kharkutta.
