Assam Police ‘razes’ houses in WKH village

NONGSTOIN, April 26: In an incident which has stirred fresh row, a delegation of 17 members from Assam Police along with officials from Forest department on Saturday morning allegedly entered Umbah village near Kyrshai in West Khasi Hills and destroyed houses of villagers residing along Meghalaya-Assam border and also damaged vegetables fields.
Sources said that the four houses which were allegedly destroyed belonged to Drooling Rani, Jenes Dia, Rajesh Sangma and Kolphet Swangre.
It has been alleged that their main intention was to arrest the headman and village secretary of Umbah village.
The incident apparently sparked fear among the locals, who went on to hide inside a forest.
In this context, the FKJGP has called upon the West Khasi Hills Police to provide security to the locals in Umbah village whiel condemning the ‘barbaric’ act.
