SHILLONG, April 26: The United Hynniewtrep Movement (UHM) on Monday expressed concern over an alleged attack on its members by an armed mob residing on the Assam side.
The attack reportedly took place at Saba village under Laskein C&RD Block in West Jaintia Hills district on April 23.
In a memorandum to Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, UHM general secretary, Teibor Shadap, informed that five of its members sustained injuries out of which three are in a critical condition.
According to the organisation, all of them were rushed to Boroto PHC and later shifted to NEIGRIHMS.
Recalling the incident, Shadap said that around 15 members of the organisation were attacked while they had gone to inspect a police outpost, which is being ‘illegally’ set up by the Assam Government at Saba village in West Jaintia Hills district.
He informed that they had met in-charge of Nartiang Police Outpost to seek more information before inspecting the illegal construction.
On reaching Saba village, he said that the construction work, according to the Assam Police, has stopped.
He, however, maintained that the work was under way.
Shadap further informed that the main in-charge of the police outpost of Borato came along with hundreds of armed mob hailing from the Umkhyrmi area.
According to the UHM, the mob assaulted the members of the organisation with knives, rods and batons.
Shadap maintained that they did not go there with the intent to create a law and order situation but to inspect the construction site of the police outpost.
“We condemn the inaction by the Assam police who stood as spectators when the mobs started to attack our member,” the UHM general secretary said.
