SHILLONG, May 6: Custodian of Myntdu river, a local body in West Jaintia Hills, has petitioned Deputy Commissioner Garod LSN Dykes, raising concerns over dumping of soil strata along the national highway-40, stating that it may possibly harm the flow of the river.
In its letter, the organisation, Khooid Ya Ka Wah Myntdu, said that during inspection of ongoing work to widen the road along the NH-40E from Treiongriang bridge over Myntdu to Lad Demthring, they learned that soil is being dumped on the roadside. It then requested the concerned authority to take immediate action as the soil may wash away into the river which is the main source of water supply for the area.
“We have found that the soil had been dumped along the roadside and may be washed away any time when the monsoon arrives affecting the flow of nearby river,” the organisation said.
“This illegal dumping of soil will have an adverse impact on the environment, especially on the Myntdu river,” he added.
