Leicester, May 8: Newcastle stunned Leicester 4-2 to inch closer to survival in the English Premier League and deal a potentially damaging blow to the Foxes’ Champions League hopes while Tottenham suffered a shock 3-1 loss to Leeds.
Callum Wilson struck twice on Friday to all but secure the Magpies’ Premier League status. They are one point from safety.
Caglar Soyuncu’s error gifted Joe Willock the opener, then Paul Dummett’s first goal in more than five years doubled the visitors’ lead.
Wilson’s second-half brace lifted the Magpies to 13th place, while Marc Albrighton and Kelechi Iheanacho scored late for Leicester.
They will be safe if Fulham fail to beat Burnley on Monday, but can go down only on goal difference as they face the Cottagers on the final day of the season.
Leicester struggled badly after losing Jonny Evans in the warm-up and remain third but opened the door for Chelsea and West Ham in the race to finish in the top four.
The Foxes go to Manchester United on Tuesday while they also face Chelsea and Tottenham after their FA Cup final against the Blues in their final three top-flight games.
With the win, Newcastle climbed to 13th among 20 teams with 39 points from 35 matches.
Leicester are in third place with 63 points, five clear of fifth-placed West Ham United, who have a match in hand.
Tottenham were beaten 3-1 by Leeds on Saturday to leave them five points from fourth place with three games to go and having played one more than Chelsea.
Dropping points at Elland Road was perhaps no surprise for a team under the interim coaching of Ryan Mason following Jose Mourinho’s firing. Leeds has now gone unbeaten against the “Big Six” at home in its first season back in the Premier League after 16 years. Marcelo Bielsa’s side has also drawn with Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City, and sits in ninth place.
Leeds was rewarded for taking the game to Tottenham in the 13th minutewhen Stuart Dallas fired a rebound into the roof of the net.
Tottenham hit back to equalize with its first shot on target on the counterattack in the 25th minute through Son Heung-min. Leeds regained the lead in the 42nd minute with Patrick Bamford’s 15th Premier League goal this season.
Leeds then made sure of all three points with in the 84th when Raphinha’s cross was met by a thumping finish from fellow substitute Rodrigo.
Crystal Palace secured its survival by beating already-relegated Sheffield United 2-0. Palace scored through Christian Benteke after only 67 seconds to end a three-match losing run on Saturday.
The second and decisive goal came in the 88th minute with Eze making a driving run towards goal. (AP)
