Second suspect in Upper Assam market blast case arrested

GUWAHATI, May 18: Assam Police have arrested the second suspect in connection with Friday’s grenade blast at Tingrai in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district.

The suspect, identified as Hiren Gogoi, was arrested from his residence at Lakhipathar in Tinsukia district.

“We have arrested Gogoi on the basis of his motorcycle, which has been found identical to the one used by the miscreants in the Tingrai Bazar grenade blast case,” a Tinsukia police official informed.

Police sources said that Gogoi was earlier involved in extortion-related activities as well.

“We have started interrogating him and have found enough clues in the case. We believe we can get to the bottom of the case soon,” the police official said.

Earlier, police arrested one Dipen Saikia from Tamuli Bongaon in Digboi for his alleged involvement in the incident.

Two persons were killed and two others injured in the blast in the market area of Tingrai under Digboi police station on Friday afternoon.

The deceased have been identified as 25-year-old Sanjit Singh and 22-year-old Surajit Talukdar, both residents of  the Tingrai area.

“Both the accused involved in the Tingrai grenade blast have been apprehended. The motorcycle used has also been recovered,” special DGP, GP Singh tweeted on Tuesday.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday visited the blast site at Tingrai to take stock of the situation.

Strongly condemning the incident, Sarma had asked the DGP to nab the culprits as early as possible and take stern action against them.
