SHILLONG, May 19: Police have cracked a theft case at an urban health centre in Nongthymmai near IIM-Shillong here with the help of a CCTV footage which, among other things, has brought to light how useful CCTV cameras can be under several circumstances.
The case was solved in only few hours as the police identified the thief from the CCTV footage, which showed he was wearing a mask and a white jacket.
A police official informed that two people, namely Anthony Khardewsaw (21) and Shulabh Deb (22) from Madanriting, have been apprehended. They also recovered the laptop and tablet, which were stolen from urban health centre on Tuesday night.
According to sources, the accused had managed to enter the health centre located on the second floor of a four-storeyed building after breaking the lock.
After the case was cracked, a police official has advocated installing CCTV cameras on all establishments including government buildings. “Yes, a profile of the accused in the criminal database has also helped to solve the case,” he added.
Despite the theft incident, the vaccination drive at the urban health centre on Wednesday went on without any hiccup.
When asked if petty crimes are on the rise in view of the prevailing situation, especially with present curbs in effect, a police official said that so far crime against property is under control. “But it will increase when people get desperate. However, cyber crime is on the rise for which people need to be cautious,” the cop said.
He also suggested that individuals and community should extend help to the needy in these trying times.
According to him, it could greatly help to prevent mental breakdown among the poor section of society as most of them are struggling to make ends meet in the present crisis.
