Young gymnasts make Meghalaya proud

SHILLONG, May 29: Several sporting activities in the state and the country have been prohibited owing to the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. But that has not deterred the young gymnasts from Meghalaya who have brought laurels to the state by winning medals in different categories of Under 10 and 12 (Boys and Girls) on the Floor exercise at the “Virtual Artistic Gymnastics Championship” organised by Standard Mantra Education & Welfare society, New Delhi earlier this month.
Though the gymnasts did not get much opportunity to practice at the indoor gymnastic hall, their individual efforts to practice during the pandemic in their homes, playgrounds, or even in the jungles has borne fruit, giving the Meghalaya Gymnastics Association the opportunity to compete in many Virtual Gymnastics Meet organised all over India.
The gymnasts from Meghalaya also participated in the “Virtual Gymnastics Invitational Meet’’ organised by the RnR Fit Gymnastics Academy, Bangalore, held on May 22 and May 23.
The competition was tough and all the top gymnastic clubs from India participated. Among the 190 participants, the gymnasts from Meghalaya were able to occupy 4th, 5th, 10th ,11th, and 14th positions in different categories.
Despite short notice, lack of practice for the past year, and their live performances through Zoom, the gymnasts still displayed their flexibility, guts, and strength.
In the Boys Under 10 category, Mankhraw G.Nongbet secured 1st position while Nangteibha Syiemlieh bagged 3rd position.
In the Girls Under 10 category, the 1st position was secured by Wansaphi B Malngiang while 2nd position was secured by Sa I Bakor Tariang.
Josephine got 3rd position in the Girls Under 12 category, while in the Boys Under 12 category, Nathaneal D Malngiang secured 3rd position.
