SHILLONG, June 9: NEHU Non-Teaching Staff Association (NEHUNSA) has written to Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ to refer an “able, capable and distinguished academician” to the President of India so as to facilitate the early appointment of the new Vice Chancellor of NEHU.
The president of NEHUNSA, Wandondor R Synrem, also stressed upon the urgency of appointment as the extended tenure of the current VC is coming to an end, and as per the statutes of the University, “if no regular VC is appointed then the senior most professor will have to take up the responsibility as an acting VC and his powers will be limited”.
NEHUNSA also pointed out in the letter to the Union Education Minister that at present the University is running with limited staff, and “this could prove to be disastrous for its future”. “At present NEHU does not have a regular Controller of examination, no regular Librarian, no regular University Engineer and no regular Director for College Development Council. The most affected department is the Examination Department as there is only one regular Deputy Registrar, manning the whole department with no supportive Assistant Registrar,” the association said.
It informed the Union minster that any failure on part of the Examination Department due to shortage of staff could put the career of thousands of students in jeopardy.
It also pointed out that a number of posts are lying vacant which can be filled only with the appointment of a regular VC, the NEHUNSA said.
