JOWAI, June 15: Irked at the alleged failure of Meghalaya government and district administration of West Jaintia Hills to protect state’s territory, the Jaintia Students Movement (JSM) central body, on Tuesday, demanded the establishment of a police outpost of Meghalaya Police next to the Border Outpost (BOP) set up by Assam in Saba village of the district.
The organisation has given the government a deadline of June 21 to fulfill their demand and stop Assam Police from operating inside Meghalaya.
“Thank you, Government of Meghalaya and the West Jaintia Hills district administration, for giving us false assurance that construction work of the BOP by Assam at Saba village under Laskein C&RD Block has been stopped”, JSM chief Lenning Rymbai said, while recalling the meeting with the authorities on April 26.
Rymbai further claimed that the construction of Assam’s BOP has been completed.
It is also alleged that the Assam Government tried to establish their police outpost in Mukroh and Khatkasla village on several occasions but were forced to refrain after the locals compelled the Meghalaya government to step in.
The group also reminded that the Assam government had established their battalion camp at Saitsama village in 2019 despite resistance from the local populace.
