TURA, June 23: Scientists are worried and medical doctors are having their hands full in the continued fight against the various mutated forms of the coronavirus and the new variant nicknamed “Delta” has been striking with a devastating effect in the state, not sparing the Garo Hills districts also.
Despite the best of attempts, active cases continue to rise and so too are the casualties.
Last night a restaurant owner lost his life to the disease in Williamnagar.
The 38-year-old owner of Chingcha restaurant near Williamnagar Civil Hospital was battling the disease when his condition deteriorated. He was being rushed to Tura corona care centre in Tura Civil Hospital when he passed away during the journey. He also had comorbidities.
In view of this, district administration in five Garo Hills districts have been vigorously going all out to get the adult population vaccinated and in the last few days the numbers have been encouraging.
With the test positivity rate in East Garo Hills hovering at 10.94% for the last two weeks, 29 new cases were detected on Wednesday, an intensified vaccination campaign is taking place to beat the pandemic.
In West Garo Hills, the numbers have been dangerously high — active cases at 574, with 59 new cases detected on Wednesday.
Despite that the vaccination drive has been found progressing well and in some villages in the district, such as Romgre, Arjigre and Bokonggre in Dadenggre and Rongram market area under Rongram Block, the vaccination percentage has shot up to 95 and 90%, respectively.
The awareness drives against the disease have clearly been working out, finally.
