SHILLONG, July 2: Congress leader, HM Shangpliang, has alleged malpractice in schools located in remotest parts of the state while asking the government to initiate an inquiry into it.
Speaking to the media persons on Friday, Shangpliang said that many appointed teachers shy away from their responsibilities and ask someone else to teach on their behalf by paying some amounts.
The MLA said that such incidents are taking place due to which the studies of children are getting affected.
“When the government has kept the criterion of MTET qualification for teachers to be selected, how are they (teachers) having the authority and audacity to hand over their teaching responsibility to someone else who do not even have the required qualifications,” Shangpliang said.
Stating that such incidents are prevalent, the MLA asked the government to initiate an inquiry and indentify the schools where such practices are taking place.
Expressing disappointment over the recent Performance Grading Index (PGI) report on the school education ranking of Meghalaya, the MLA asserted that many government schools in the state lack adequate facilities and infrastructure.
“If you visit any rural area, you will find that many government LP schools require new buildings, good roofs, repair extensions and most of all good furniture. I urge the government to provide better infrastructure for a better environment for both the students as well as teachers,” the MLA said.
He also said that since many schools lack proper infrastructure and students are sometimes forced to share their textbooks, their interest gradually deadens, which leads to the students dropping out.
