SHILLONG, July 4: Congress MLA from Mawlai, PT Sawkmie, has reasoned that fresh COVID cases are still high in number in Meghalaya as the Health department is conducting maximum tests in both rural as well as urban areas.
Reacting to the statement of Minister of State in charge of DoNER, Jitendra Singh, Sawkmie said that there are very less number of severe cases albeit a number of people testing positive. “I laud the efforts of the Health department for doing the testing aggressively in order to segregate the positive cases from the community,” he said.
The Congress MLA also pointed out that the number of deaths due to COVID has also reduced, adding that the numbers (COVID deaths) is higher in Assam as compared to Meghalaya.
Earlier, the DoNER minister had expressed concern over the effects of the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic on Meghalaya and other Northeastern states.
Addressing a meeting of the top officials from North East on Saturday, Singh had noted that there has been a progressive decline in COVID-19 cases in all Northeastern states but “Meghalaya is the only exception which witnessed a surge due to the COVID-19 cases at a prison in Ri Bhoi district”.
