SHILLONG, July 16: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday stated that the NPP-led MDA is not keen on the option for a separate statehood of the Garos and the Khasi-Jaintia.
Pointing out that Meghalaya got its statehood after a lot of sacrifice, the chief minister said that the primary focus of the MDA right now is to work for the development of the entire state and the demand for a separate Garo and Khasi-Jaintia state is not in its sight.
Stating that some people feel development can be achieved by having separate states, he however countered such a proposition calling the development process a forward movement even as he maintained that it is unnecessary to look at that option.
Earlier, the Garoland State Movement Committee and Hill State People’s Democratic Party had joined hands to pursue the demands for separate statehood.
