117 dead in SA violence
Johannesburg, July 16: A total of 117 people have lost their lives during violent protests which have been taking place for a week in South Africa, said Acting Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni. Addressing reporters on Thursday, Ntshavheni said 26 deaths had been recorded in Gauteng, while 91 lives were lost in KwaZulu-Natal, reports Xinhua news agency. She said the situation is improving in Gauteng province while KwaZulu-Natal is still volatile but was slowly moving toward stability. A total of 2,203 arrests were made in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). (IANS)

30 inmates injured in riot
Los Angeles, July 16: A riot in a Los Angeles prison left some 30 prisoners and two personnel injured, local media reported. Castaic’s Pitchess Detention Center, commonly referred to as the Wayside jail, is located in Santa Clarita city and operated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, reports Xinhua news agency. It was designed to house approximately 8,600 male inmates in its four separate facilities. The local Santa Clarita Valley Signal newspaper reported that Los Angeles County Fire Department received a call afternoon at the jail’s address and dispatched multiple ambulances to the scene. Earthquake hits Japan
Tokyo, July 16: An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale on Friday struck off the Hachijojima Islands in Japan. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the temblor occurred at around 1.20 p.m., with its epicentre at a latitude of 33.2 degrees north and a longitude of 139.4 degrees east, and at a depth of 10 km, reports Xinhua news agency. The quake logged 4 in some parts of Tokyo Prefecture on the Japanese seismic intensity scale which peaks at 7. So far no tsunami warning has been issued. (IANS)

Bolsonaro’s Prez stable
Sao Paulo, July 16: Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s health condition is satisfactory, but he will remain hospitalised for the treatment of an intestinal obstruction, according to a medical report. “The President remains without discharge forecast,” said the report issued on Thursday by the private Vila Nova Star Hospital here, where Bolsonaro was admitted a day earlier after being transported from the capital Brasilia due to abdominal pain, in a report. Bolsonaro, 66, will not be operated on at the moment but will undergo “clinical treatment” for the intestinal obstruction that caused, among other symptoms. (IANS)
