KSU backs call for upgrade of Mawsynram

MAWKYRWAT, July 20: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) South West Khasi Hills District has extended its support to various organisations from Mawsynram Block as well as MLA of Mawsynram Constituency in their demand for upgrade of Mawsynram into a Civil Subdivision.
Union president Forwardman Nongrem maintained that the topography of Mawsynram Block, distance of the border areas to the district headquarters in Shillong, and the poor connectivity in terms of road and communication, are some of the factors affecting the development of the block.
Nongrem said that the demand for an upgrade is justified as Mawsynram covers a total area of 510 km and in addition to that, the distance from the district headquarter to Mawsynram is 56 km, while villages bordering with Bangladesh are more than 80 km away.
“Furthermore, as a Civil Subdivision is the only realistic way of bringing the administration closer to the people and as the present government has stated that it is a people’s government, hence we strongly convey our message to the state government to listen to the demands made by the residents,” Nongrem said.
