Indian race walk coach fails to get accreditation for Olympics
New Delhi, July 20: Race walk coach Gurmeet Singh and discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur’s coach Rakhi Tyagi will not be travelling to the Tokyo Olympics due to lack of accreditation. It is learnt that the Athletics Federation of India’s (AFI) last-minute effort to get accreditation for Gurmeet and Kamalpreet’s coach Rakhi Tyagi did not work out as their names were in the long list submitted months before the start of Olympics to get accredited. “Gurmeet’s name and that of Rakhi Tyagi were not in the long list submitted a few months ago and AFI’s last minute effort to get them accredited did not bear fruit,” a team source told PTI. “We are still trying.” (PTI)
Ban Ki-moon re-elected as IOC Ethics Commission Chair
TOKYO, July 20: Former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was reelected for an additional four-year term as Chair of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Ethics Commission at the 138th IOC Session here on Tuesday. The South Korean has held the position since 2017. The IOC Session also re-elected Xue Hanqin from China as a member of the Commission for an additional four-year term. (UNI)
Bala Devi, Manisha Kalyan named winners of annual AIFF awards
New Delhi, July 20: Indian women’s national team forward Bala Devi has been named as the AIFF Womens Footballer of the Year 2020/21, with youngster Manisha Kalyan winning the AIFF Womens Emerging Footballer of the Year award. This is the third time Bala has won the award, having previously won it two years in a row in 2014 and 2015. Currently playing for Rangers Women’s FC in Scotland, Bala made her debut for the team in February last year and created history by scoring her first competitive goal for the side in December. She remains the first Indian woman footballer to sign a professional contract in Europe. (IANS)
IM Saha and WIM Mukherjee win Junior Chess Championship
Kolkata, July 20: IM Neelash Saha and WIM Arpita Mukherjee won the National Junior Open Chess Championship in Boys and Girls sections as they scored 7.5 points and 6.5 points respectively out of 8 rounds, which were organised virtually and concluded on Monday evening. The two-day championship, organised by Sara Bangla Daba Sangstha, affiliated to All India Chess Federation, the State Junior Open & Girls (Combined) Online Chess Championship. This was the selection tournament for the forthcoming National Junior Open and Girls Tournament. (UNI)
Deepika stuns world champion Alfiya at Youth Boxing C’ship
Sonipat, July 20: Haryana boxer Deepika defeated the reigning Youth World Champion Alfiya Pathan to cause a major upset at the 4th Youth National Boxing Championships, here. Playing in the heavyweight 81+ kg women’s quarter-finals, Deepika produced a splendid show against the strong medal contender Maharashtra’s Alfiya to secure a 4-1 victory in an intense battle on late Monday evening. The 2019 Junior Nationals bronze medallist Deepika will take on Chandigarh’s Mehak Mor in the semi-finals. (UNI)
Six sports federations granted full IOC recognition
Tokyo, July 20: Six sporting federations have been granted full recognition by the International Olympic Committee at the 138th IOC Session on Tuesday. The six are the International Sambo Federation (FIAS), World Lacrosse, the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations, the International Federation of Muaythai Associations, the International Federation Icestocksport and International Cheer Union. Everton suspends unnamed player amid police case
LIVERPOOL, July 20: Everton has suspended a player pending a police investigation, the Premier League club said Tuesday. The northwest-England team did not identify the player or any details about the police case. “The club will continue to support the authorities with their inquiries and will not be making any further statement at this time,” Everton said in a statement. Everton players are in pre-season training. The team opens its Premier League campaign against Southampton on Aug. 14. (AP)
