Men lead assault on PWD official, arrested

TURA, July 24: Police in North Garo Hills have arrested three men who allegedly barged into a PWD official’s government quarters on Thursday night and assaulted him and two women over allegations of immoral activities.
The three men reportedly broke into in the residence of the PWD overseer at Adokgre during nighttime over reports that he was indulged in immoral activities, and on finding two women inside, the trio began assaulting him.
The official, RN Marak, who is in his 50s, was then questioned and reportedly assaulted by several men from the village, who charged him with immoral activity.
They men also assaulted the two women and videotaped the incident, which later did rounds on social media.
The assailants also snatched the official’s money and took away his two-wheeler from the compound.
An injured Marak then lodged a complaint with Adokgre police station and said that while one of the women was a cousin, the other was her friend.
Police then swiftly acted on the complaint and arrested the three ringleaders of the group that entered the residence and led the assault.
The men who were arrested have been identified as Phantom O Sangma (27), Azariah A Momin (21) and Churik A Momin (25).
According to North Garo Hills police, the three men were also allegedly involved in creating stumbling blocks to COVID-19 vaccination drives in the area.
Police are also on the lookout for others assailants who were part of the attack.
