SHILLONG, July 25: In the wake of the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor in the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), KHNAM MLA from North Shillong, Adelbert Nongrum, has registered resentment over Centre not appointing Prof. Sherwin May Sungoh as the new VC.
The MLA further went on to express disappointment over Union Home Minister Amit Shah being non-committal on the demand for ILP in Meghalaya.
“It is a great disappointment to see that the Union government has completely brushed aside legitimate demands of people of Meghalaya. This clearly reflects that the lack of concern of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre towards the people of the state,” the MLA said in a statement issued here on Sunday.
According to him, in the present context of ‘deeply mismanaged and almost collapsed situation’ of NEHU, appointment of the VC should have primarily been based on who could give a healing touch to the University.
“The choice of Prof. PS Shukla does not in any way meet this need for capability and healing touch, as neither he fits into a multidisciplinary university nor his selection is in conformity to what every section of society wanted, as NEHU belongs to everyone,” Nongrum added, while questioning the sidelining of the appointment of Prof. Sungoh as the new of VC.
On the issue of ILP, he said: “As stated again and again, ILP is an instrument of not harassing other Indian people, but a way of preventing misuse of tribal culture, land, hospitality and acceptance of others by our people. Modi-Shah government acted deaf, dumb and autistic before this legitimate demand of people of the state,” he said.
