Ball in Centre’s court: Hek justifies NEHU VC’s appointment
SHILLONG, July 26: BJP leader AL Hek, who had earlier demanded for a local vice-chancellor for NEHU, has said that the appointment of a vice-chancellor for a central university like NEHU is not in the state government’s hands. The statement from the cabinet minister comes subsequently to the recent appointment of Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla as the new vice-chancellor of NEHU, despite the clamour for a local VC for the university. “Right from the level of CM, myself, Speaker and even Deputy Chief Minister — we went to New Delhi several times to meet the HRD minister in this regard. We even met our national party leaders and asked for a local vice chancellor but if it has not happened, it is not in our hands as the decision on the appointment of the VC for NEHU is taken by the Centre,” Hek said.
