Do We Have A Career Freedom?

By Ranjan K Baruah

We are celebrating our Independence Day and it means freedom. When we are celebrating the day and the occasion we also think about ourselves and our future. One of the buzz words for any student or other young people is career. The career is an individual’s metaphorical “journey” through learning, work and other aspects of life. There are a number of ways to define career and the term is used in a variety of ways. There are dictionary meanings but sometimes we may not precisely define what is career to one individual as there might be different perspectives. Whether we agree to any definition or not, career is important for all of us.
Like defining career we may not exactly define career freedom. Let us try to talk about it according to simple understanding. I am mentioning it as many students do not have the freedom to choose what they want. The influence of parents, teachers are dominant amongst many for which many miss their passion and get engaged in work which they do not like passionately. It is not possible for everyone to follow passion and make it to their profession but with proper planning things can be made possible instead of impossible.
If we can choose the subjects of our interest and get placement or get self employed in the field which we like then we can say that we have career freedom. There are many elements that would affect when it comes to career freedom. There are situations for which we may not be able to take the subjects of our interests or join a profession according to our interest. Freedom is missing when we do not act and plan accordingly. We can get information related to many options and plan accordingly for our future to make our career a vibrant one.
Now the question is what do we need to have career freedom? Well, it is challenging to have career freedom but it is possible to make it happen. We need good counseling and mentorship and ideas to plan according to our interest. Many parents and guardians are not aware of the present job market but they emphasize on traditional subjects which they think are prestigious like taking up a few technical courses which may be a degree or diploma. For career freedom of any child or student their parents or guardians must be aware of different options as their pressure directly impacts on one’s career. Like parents and guardians, the roles of teachers are also crucial when it comes to career freedom as they can guide the students according to their interest and choice. Apart from parents, guardians or teachers, the role of career mentor is also important but this will come later as they are not directly related with students like parents or teachers.
There are opportunities and options in various fields with different subjects. Let us not think that only science courses give more benefits when it compares with arts or commerce. Nowadays all the subjects are important and it is important for aspirants how they use their qualification and their skills to get a job or become self employed. Let us focus on career planning and plan strategically with the help of others who can give ideas for our future. If we can choose the right subject and prepare well, it means we shall end up in the right profession. Let us celebrate our independence day and also focus on our career so that we can proudly say that we have career freedom too. There would be challenges but they can be overcome and let us take up the challenge to build ourselves and also build our country. As India is entering 75 years of freedom, let us celebrate it with joy and also contribute to making the nation a developed nation instead of a developing nation as soon as possible. A good career means we shall be able to contribute to the growth of the nation hence we can say that we do need career freedom.
