Felicitation of COVID warriors, villages mark I-Day

SHILLONG, Aug 16: Meghalaya joined the nationwide celebrations of the 75th Independence Day with localities and villages in state, which have recorded cent per cent vaccination coverage, being feted along with COVID-19 warriors.

East Khasi Hills
In the state capital on Sunday, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma hoisted the Tricolour at Polo Ground, and took the Rashtriya Salute of three parade contingents comprising BSF, CRPF and SF-10, Meghalaya Police, and the Brass Band of the Border Wing Home Guards.
During the programme, the chief minister released a book titled Celebrating India@75, a collaborative effort of the Department of Arts and Culture, the Synod College Management Authority and the Meghalaya Freedom Song, commissioned by the Arts and Culture department.
During the programme, Conrad also felicitated health workers and frontliners who have been making significant contributions in fight against COVID-19. The citation was handed over to Dr R Tariang, Dr P Manners and Dr Robert Marak.
The chief minister also handed over the award under Megha Health Insurance Scheme and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana to Mawsynram CHC, Laitlyngkot PHC and Diengiei PHC under the category of top-performing CHC and PHCs.Police and home guard personnel were also conferred with medals under various categories.
The Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) Shillong, on the other hand, organised a programme to mark the day during which Ex-Additional Director, CGHS, Dr LS Singh, who was the guest of honour, hoisted the Tricolour. The programme was also attended by Additional Director, CGHS, Dr SR Rumthao, officials, staff and CGHS beneficiaries.
The North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) marked the day by holding a programme at the Administrative Block of the permanent campus. According to a statement, the Tricolour was hoisted by Vice Chancellor Prof PS Shukla, which was followed by the singing of the national anthem. “This was followed by the VC’s address and launch of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mohatsav. The programme concluded with a performance by schoolchildren,” a statement in this regard said.

The staffers of BBS College, too, celebrated the day by hoisting the national flag on the college premises. The programme was attended by college principal Sanjay Rana, ANO Captain Jag Prasad Uppadhya, NCC cadets, NSS volunteers, et al.
The Commissioner and Secretary of Arts and Culture Department, FR Kharkongor, on Sunday released a special cover celebrating Azadi Ke Amrit Mohotsav. According to a statement, the programme, which was attended by Chief Postmaster General, NE Circle, Amitabh Kharkwal and Director of Postal Services Subhash Chandra Barik, also marked the conclusion of the weeklong online philately exhibition. It may be mentioned that many philatelists from the North East partook in the exhibition that focussed on themes like Freedom Struggle, India@75, Progress of India, et al.
Tributes were also paid to Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore at Brookside Rilbong, Shillong, to mark the75th Independence Day.

At Nongpoh, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong hoisted the national flag and took the Rashtriya Salute of five parade contingents at NSCA Mini Stadium Pahamsyiem, Nongpoh.
Other highlights of the day include distribution of awards for best PHC, best CHC, best private hospital, award for a village achieving 100 per cent vaccination, Entrepreneur Championship Award, Online Competition, award for COVID warriors of 6th Battalion Meghalaya Police Umran and distribution of prizes to the winners of a cultural programme.

Other highlights of the day include cultural programme, distribution of eatables among patients of Nongstoin Civil Hospital, St. Peter’s Green Pasture Orphanage, Pyndengrei, S.Wollington Children’s Home, Nongpyndeng & Shelter Homes for Boys & Girls and Nondein New- Nongstoin.
Pariong PHC, Nongkhlaw CHC and Nongstoin Civil Hospital were awarded under the categories of top-performing PHC, CHC and district hospital in the district.

West Jaintia Hills
At Jowai, Urban Affairs Minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar, hoisted the Tricolour at Jrisalein playground and acknowledged the contributions by the frontline workers in the fight against COVID-19. He also distributed certificates of appreciation among health workers.

East Jaintia Hills
At Khliehriat, Social Welfare Minister, Kyrmen Shylla, hoisted the Tricolour and took the Rashtriya Salute at Khliehriat Higher Secondary School playground.
The award for best-performing PHC was conferred upon Pamra Paithlu PHC while Khliehriat CHC received the award for the best-performing CHC.
In East Jaintia Hills, Malidor village was awarded for being the first village to attain cent per cent vaccination coverage.

West Garo Hills
At Tura, Agriculture Minister, Banteidor Lyngdoh, hoisted the national flag at Matchakolgre LP School Field, New Tura, and took the Rashtriya Salute of parade contingents.
Lyngdoh, during the function, also conferred the Certificate of Recognition for Frontline Covid Warrior to Gracefield Marak and Tengsrang B Marak, Tura Municipal Board. He also presented the Certificate of Appreciation to Tura Civil Hospital, Selsella CHC and Purakhasia PHC, and SMHO 2nd Bn MLP Unit Hospital Goeragre, Dr Gauri G Momin, and Hav/Compounder, Unit Hospital, Goeragre, Clyforth K Sangma.

East Garo Hills
At Williamnagar, Meghalaya Health Advisory Board Chairman, Rakkam A Sangma, hoisted the Tricolour and took the Rashtriya Salute at Rongrenggre Higher Secondary School playground.
The highlights of the celebration include a cultural programme, tableau presentation, certificate distribution, et al.

South Garo Hills
At Baghmara, NPP spokesperson, Marcuise N Marak, hoisted the Tricolour and took the Rashtriya Salute at Baghmara Sports playground.
During the celebration, Certificates of Appreciation were given away to Siju PHC and Nongalbibra PHC for being the top-performing PHC based on the utilisation of MHIS packages. He also distributed micro ATM during the programme.

North Garo Hills
At Resubelpara, Deputy Speaker Timothy D Shira hoisted the Tricolour and took the Rashtriya Salute at Resubelpara Mini Stadium.
The lone SSLC topper from the district and villages with 100 per cent COVID vaccination coverage were also feted during the day.

South West Khasi Hills
At Mawkyrwat, PHE Minister Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar hoisted the Tricolour and took the Rashtriya Salute during a programme at Maharam Government Higher Secondary School playground.
The district administration, during the programme, gave away awards to villages, zonal magistrates, sector officers, gramsevaks, ASHAs and Anganwadi workers for mobilising people for vaccination. Villages that have achieved cent per cent vaccination coverage will be sanctioned Rs 5 lakh each for any developmental scheme of their choice by Meghalaya Basin Development Agency, it was announced.

South West Garo Hills
At Ampati, Power Minister James PK Sangma hoisted the national flag and took the Rashtriya Salute at Ampati Mini Stadium.
The minister also felicitated five villages that have achieved 100 per cent vaccination coverage. Altogether, 74 ASHAs from the district were also felicitated for their efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. On the occasion, Belbari PHC and Zikzak PHC were also awarded as the top-performing health facilities in South West Garo Hills under MHIS-PMJAY. Three meritorious students from the district, too, were felicitated by James.
