SHILLONG, Aug 17: Expressing profound concern over the current state of affairs in the state, the Khasi Jaintia Christian Leaders Forum has called upon the state government and all leaders of different churches and groups, headmen, youth, etc., to work together for peace and security in the state in view of the recent incidents of arson and violence which occurred after the killing of former Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) leader, Cheristerfield Thangkhiew, on August 13.
In a statement, the Forum has conveyed its condolences to the family of Thangkhiew and to all those who miss his presence.
It also exhorted upon the government and those in power to complete their responsibilities at the earliest in a fair and transparent manner. “We are all filled with deep sadness at the shooting which took the life of Cheristerfield Thangkhiew in the darkness before the dawn of August 13, 2021. It is noted that the law-enforcers have trampled upon an abode and a hamlet, which has filled everyone with surprise and bitterness. The citizens are now losing their trust and confidence in the law-enforcers and those in authority,” the forum said in the statement, while pointing out that much work is left in dealing with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic affecting the state.
“So many have been affected and our communities are still under the brutal grips of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we can no longer sustain and bear the pandemics of prejudice and insecurities in daily life as we strive towards normalcy,” it added.
